Frequently Asked Questions

— What is happening in Palestine?

Palestinians are currently facing an ongoing genocide. With US weapons, israel has been killing Palestinian civilians on a massive scale for over a year and a half. Nearly 70 percent of all structures in Gaza have been destroyed or damaged, along with 92 percent of all housing units.  (source: Doctors Without Borders, January 2025)

— What is israel?

israel is an apartheid state, built on stolen Palestinian land. Since 1948, israel has been illegally stealing Palestinian land in violation of international law, and currently occupies 78% of Palestine.

— Why is this our problem in Australia?

Aside from Australia being in breach of international law by supplying arms to a state committing genocide, our involvement in the United States’ military plans costs Australia billions of dollars that could be spent on things that could benefit the Australian people, such as free doctor visits, free dental, free mental health services, free childcare, and more.

— What is Zionism?

Zionism is a political and nationalist movement that originated in the late 19th century with the goal of establishing a Jewish homeland and the land of israel on Palestine. Zionism promotes a state that prioritises Jews over all others, and even certain types of Jews over others.

Zionism, as a movement focused on establishing and maintaining a Jewish state, has been critiqued for marginalizing certain groups of Jews, including non-European Jews, ultra-Orthodox Jews, and Jews who oppose Zionism for religious, political or humanitarian reasons.

The implementation of Zionism, particularly in the early years of the Israeli state, resulted in inequalities and divisions between different Jewish communities.

— Is it a religious conflict?

No. It is Palestinians resisting illegal occupation, land theft, apartheid, forced displacement, and murder by an occupational army. While a lot of Palestinians are Muslim, and most israelis are Jewish, the people of Palestine were a mix of Christians, Jews, and Muslims prior the the establishment of israel as a Jewish only state.

— What is genocide?

The UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (1948) provides a legal definition of genocide. According to this convention, genocide includes any of the following acts committed with the intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial, or religious group:

  1. Killing members of the group

  2. Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group

  3. Deliberately inflicting conditions that lead to the group’s physical destruction, such as deprivation of food, medical care, or other essentials for survival.

  4. Imposing measures to prevent births within the group, such as forced sterilization or restrictions on family planning.

  5. Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group, with the intention of eradicating the group’s identity.

— How is Australia breaching international law?

By supplying armour and weapons parts to a state engaged in genocide, Australia is both complicit in the genocide, and breaching the law.

On January 26, 2024, the International Court of Justice ruled that israel is plausibly committing genocide, and the ICJ’s provisional measures in this case called for all states to avoid actions that could contribute to the commission of genocide and emphasized their responsibility to prevent genocide under the Genocide Convention.

The ICJ stressed that states providing military, economic, or other forms of support to Israel must be careful not to contribute to genocide-related actions.

However, Australia has continued a two way arms trade with israel, and continued to supply bomb release mechanisms, bomb bay door opening mechanisms, and armour plating, all of which directly enable genocide.

— How many Palestinian civilians has israel killed in Gaza?

As of 4 March 2025, over 50,000 people – 48,405 Palestinian and 1,706 israeli – have been reported killed in israel’s genocide on Gaza according to the official figures of the Gaza Health Ministry, as well as 166 journalists and media workers (a war crime), 120 academics, and over 224 humanitarian aid workers (a war crime), a number that includes 179 employees of UNRWA. Scholars have estimated 80% of Palestinians killed are civilians, with 70% of those being women and children.

However, with israel destroying over 50% of Gaza’s hospitals (a war crime), and damaging those that remain, death toll figures are difficult to report accurately. And with between 6000 and 14000 people missing, and thousands buried under the rubble of israel’s bombings, combined with those being currently starved (a war crime) the death toll is likely to rise drastically as the genocide continues.

— What are the crucial roles Australia plays in genocide?

No bombs could be dropped on Gaza by an F-35 without parts manufactured for the F-35s by Melbourne company, Rosebank Engineering (RUAG Australia).

The company is the sole global producer of the F-35’s ‘uplock actuators’ that open and close the weapons bay doors to drop its payload.

A Brisbane company, Ferra Engineering, manufactures ‘weapons adaptors’, the mechanisms that hold and release the bombs carried by the F-35, being dropped on civilians in Gaza.

“Ferra is the sole source supplier for the [F-35] Joint Strike Fighter weapons adaptors. Every Joint Strike Fighter flying world-wide will have adaptors produced by Ferra,” their website states. (source: Declassified Australia) This means that not one single bomb could have been dropped on civilians in Gaza without Australia’s direct help.

Bisalloy Steels (based in Unanderra) supplies armoured steels to israel for use on its tanks and armoured vehicles, which are used to commit genocide and illegal land theft.

— Why are my tax dollars helping israel commit war crimes?

Because not enough people are holding their government accountable. Our government is currently in a $900 million+ arms deal with israel, which helps fund israel’s war crimes. If you feel that your tax dollars could be better used, write to your local member and let them know.

— What is antisemitism?

Antisemitism refers to prejudice, discrimination, or hostility against Semites. The term “Semite” originally referred to a group of ancient peoples who spoke Semitic languages, which include Hebrew, Arabic, Aramaic, Amharic, and others. The Semitic languages are a branch of the Afro-Asiatic language family, and both Palestinians and Jews (who speak Hebrew) are historically part of this Semitic linguistic and cultural group.

— What role does the media play in fueling hatred?

Media bias contributes to manufacturing public consent for genocide, hatred, and many other things that people would not ordinarily support. Choosing to report news in a skewed way, failing to mention key details, etc, are all things that can make a situation seem reasonable, when in reality it is horrific and depraved. A google search of israel/Palestine conflict versus Russia/Ukraine conflict in news headlines will reveal a stark difference in how the same situations are reported. In one instance, stating clear facts that show Russia as responsible for its actions, and in the other instance, being very vague about the horrors that israel has committed, and in some cases justifying them.

— What is a Keffiyeh?

The keffiyeh is a traditional Palestinian headscarf, there are three main patterns featured, including fishnets, bold routes and olive leaves. The most famous fishnet pattern, which slightly resembles the houndstooth pattern, represents Palestinian sailors and the Mediterranean sea. Fishing was a huge aspect of Palestinian life, especially in Jaffa and Haifa. Secondly, the bold routes and lines featured symbolized trade routes of natural & cultural merchant exchange. Lastly, the wavy olive leaves represent perseverance, strength & resilience. Olive trees are a huge symbol of Palestine as well as Palestinian struggle, as it showcases the attachment to the land even as many olive farmers lose their land and beloved olive trees.
